Our Favorite Family Board Games

We love games. Scratch that… I LOVE GAMES. I remember spending entire days playing Monopoly with my Mom when I was younger, I remember sitting in our shared room playing Risk with my older brother, and I remember playing chess with one of my step brothers every day after school.

The kids share my love for games, thankfully. I’ll always remember sitting on the floor playing Go Fish with The Pharaoh when he was just over 2 years old, Birdie was only weeks old just laying next to us. I remember being thankful that I’ll have kids to play board games with. Now that they are older (16 months, 4, and 6), we play board games multiple times a week, and The Pharaoh and Birdie play a board game together almost daily.

Here is a list of our FAVORITE family board games..

1. Qwirkle

Such a simple game of colors and shapes, but it’s a ton of fun for kids and adults! Half of the time we don’t even keep score. I remember the first time we played this last year and I was blown away that Birdie (age 3 at the time) could play with minimal help!

2. Guess Who

Another game I remember playing a lot as a child. This is a great game for kids to practice taking turns, asking questions, and paying attention to detail!

3. Dr. Suess Cat in the Hat Card Game

Great game to get kids moving! Each player picks a card from three piles. The first card says what you’ll be doing (ie: crab walk or skip). Second card says where you’ll do that to (ie: to the sink and back or around a chair). The third card says where you’ll be holding the fish while you do this (ie: under your chin or on your head). My kids laugh SO hard every single time we play this game.

This is a GREAT stocking stuffer!!

4. Sequence for Kids

The original Sequence game is one of my favorites, but it uses normal playing cards. This version uses fun animal cards and kids only need to get 4 in a row instead of five. My two older kids often play this together by themselves, but you can have up to 4 players.

5. Zingo Sight Words

They also make other versions, but this is the one we have and it’s a great learning game for early readers!

6. Spot It or Emojinks

There are many different themes of Spot it such as Finding Dory, Camping, NFL, and Doc McStuffins. This game is FUN, and excellent for traveling or waiting at a restaurant or doctor’s office! My husband and I have even played this without the kids once or twice.

7. HedBanz

I cannot write this without thinking of the episode of The Office (hand on forehead, chuckling to myself). This game is much more appropriate than their version. Great thinking game for all ages!!

8. Stare! Junior Edition

This might be one of my all time favorite games. And once I briefly explain it, some of you are going to think I am super LAME! You (or you and your team, depending on how many are playing) stare at a picture for a certain amount of time. When the time is up, you hand the picture back and answer questions about that picture. For example, “what was the frog holding?”, “how many people were wearing a hat?”, or “who was wearing brown shoes?”. Good times! 🙂

9. 5 Second Rule Junior

My kids love the sound the timer makes, but the game is fun too! You have 5 seconds to come up with three answers. For example, “name 3 things you dip in ketchup”. They have different versions if you want a more difficult one.

10. Pancake Pile-Up! Relay Game

We actually don’t have this one (yet), but my kids played this at our friends house and they were LAUGHING and cheering each other on. It was so cute to watch!

12. Richard Scarry’s Busytown, Eye Found It

What I love most about this game, is you participate as a team. You still practice taking turns, but you win together, whether you have 2, 3, or four players. Searching for the items is honestly a lot of fun!

15. Monopoly Jr Party

There are many versions of Monopoly Jr. such as Finding Dory and Incredibles 2. Someone handed down this Monopoly Jr Party version to us and my kids absolutely LOVE it. Birdie wins EVERY time (I thought it was just beginners luck, but… this game loves her!). You go around buying different parties: pizza party, swimming party, magic party… etc. It’s a great kid’s version of Monopoly that even 3 and 4 year olds can play. Kids love being the “banker”!

15. Sushi Go

We recently bought this game and have been playing it EVERY DAY since! It says ages 8+, but here’s what I love about this game… my 4 year old can play without help. She’s actually caught on surprisingly well, but even if she hadn’t – she could just play random cards and still score points. This is a great game for traveling, and it’s a quick 3-round strategy game that is truly fun for all ages!
